Satsuma Season!

I love this time of year, the air gets crisp and the nights get cozy. You find yourself craving eggnog and gingersnap cookies. In my case, satsumas.
Those big boxes of them at the store? I buy them, lots and lots of them. They’re just the perfect snack, easy to peel (I pride myself in only peeling them in one piece, not that it’s difficult…), perfectly segmented, no seeds, and they make you smell divine. I’m also eating one right now, which will be followed by several more. Can’t get enough vitamin C!
The orange zest you can get from satsumas is amazing, I use them in cookies, soups, brownies, or as decoration. You can get beautiful orange curly-cues from the peel too. Or use the zest in this recipe for Orange-Infused Dark Chocolate Ice Cream with Roasted Walnuts (swoon). Or infuse some good vodka with it.
Mmmm, food porn.

There is a cafe in Seattle called Chocolati that makes the most divine orange mochas you will ever taste. They also sell a drink that is basically a cup of rich, melted, dark chocolate, ahhh heavenly bliss. If you come to Seattle, seek them out. It’s impossible to be dissappointed. My husband and I live near one, which is rather dangerous to our health. I would suggest trying to make your own orange mochas or hot chocolate, but it’s just not the same. Here’s a recipe if you want to try it out:
A Chocolate Covered To-Do List
2 cups milk (whole is best)
4 oz. bittersweet chocolate (finely chopped)
2 tsp. fresh orange zest
1/2 tsp. instant coffee
1/8 tsp. nutmeg
Warm milk until just under boiling point. Remove from heat and whisk in chocolate, orange zest, coffee and nutmeg. Strain into heavy mugs. Serve topped with whipped cream.

But the real recipe I suggest you try is from the FatFree Vegan Kitchen for Chocolate-Orange Cake, it’s downright sinful–except it’s not so bad with no fat and whole wheat flour. And the picture of the cake that she made is gorgeous, at least go look at that.
I also adore these orange peel candles from Apartment Therapy, try and make them yourself!

I could go on for hours about all the great ideas for satsumas out there, but now I think I’ll just go grab another.
| 2 cups (500 mL) | milk |
| 4 oz. (125 g) | bittersweet chocolate (finely chopped) |
| 2 tsp. (10 mL) | fresh orange zest |
| 1/2 tsp. (2 mL) | instant coffee |
| 1/8 tsp. (0.5 mL) | nutmeg |

i love satsumas! i call them “crack oranges” because they’re so addictive!
Haha, “crack oranges”, that’s hilarious. I completely agree. One of my friends said she’s going to go broke buying them because they are just so darn delicious!
I totally try to get my orange peels off in one piece too :-) When I was a kid I thought if you did that you would get 1 wish, and if you had 12 pieces in the orange you would get another, and 1 more wish for each piece more than 12 that you had too.
Ok so after reading your comment I went and got an orange. I got only 1 wish for the peel, my orange had 11 segments…figures, haha. That’s just a really cute idea. :D
This sounds amazingg!!!!!!!
And ah, i hope the link is working…..maybe it’s just you?? :) hahaha
I love orange and chocolate, too…it’s a great combo.
I was thrilled to see that you linked to my Orange Infused Dark Chocolate Ice Cream…it’s my all time favorite. Thanks so much. :)
